2013 And we're off! (Info on the Eggs)

The 2013 nesting season is well underway! Big Red and Ezra now have three eggs, laid March 14, 17, and 20. The average hatch window for red-tailed hawks is 28-35 days. I used those numbers as a ballpark reference. However, last year, Big Red and Ezra's first hawklet arrived in 38 days, and none hatched on the early side of that "average window." In 2012, first hatch came 32 days after the clutch was completed and 38 days after the first egg was laid.

BR & 3 Eggs Have A Rainbow Connection In The Snow! by ncaerie

As Ezra demonstrated multiple times last year, he loves his egg-sitting and baby-sitting duties. Big Red often has a hard time getting him off the nest at the end of his shift....sometimes she has to resort to a talon or a push! Too funny!
